Don’t Leave Firearms Unsecured

Over recent months there has been a spate of thefts from rural properties where firearms have been targeted.

Police are urging owners take all reasonable precautions to ensure that firearms are kept safe, complying with legislated storage requirements.

Securing firearms out of sight may help prevent removal however where thieves have time to look around, it is important that property owners step up theft prevention measures by locking homes and sheds to avoid becoming a target.

Ballarat Crime Prevention Officer Leading Senior Constable Donna Parsons says “rural properties can be easy targets for burglars and so we need to be extra vigilant that firearms do not come into the possession of unauthorised persons“

In addition, if you see people loitering in or around properties and believe they are up to no good:
•  Record descriptions eg: height, build, clothing, & distinctive features – tattoos etc.
•  Vehicle details eg: registration numbers, colour, make, model etc and
