Celebrating the Power of Volunteers in Golden Plains

Volunteers in regional and rural areas such as Golden Plains Shire are the 'glue' that holds communities together.

Cr Jenny Blake, Mayor of Golden Plains Shire explains, “Volunteers within the Golden Plains Shire provide an outstanding contribution, commitment and passion to making our community a great place to live.  Without this support our community groups, emergency services, schools and support services etc. could not operate as effectively. They are the life blood of our community and are a significant and valued asset to the Golden Plains Shire.”

“National Volunteer Week is a wonderful opportunity for us all to acknowledge and celebrate the generosity of the many volunteers that contribute their skills, time and life experiences to develop a strong, healthy and inclusive community.” Cr Blake said.

“Our volunteers come from all walks of life, they represent all ages, abilities and backgrounds and their contributions are an essential part of our community.” Cr Blake said.

A great example of this contribution was demonstrated at the recent Annual Golden Youth Awards held at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre during National Youth Week. Young people from across the Shire were recognised and rewarded for their volunteering efforts in a range of categories. Award winners included:

  • Anna Peet (Music and Art) for her contribution to the Berringa Bulletin.

  • Ricky Howling (Sport and Recreation) for his leadership with the Bannockburn Cricket Club.

  • Mick Grant (Health and Wellbeing) for his support of local initiatives including the redevelopment of the Bannockburn Skate Park.

  • Toby Ford (Community Involvement) for the development and growth of junior cricket through the delivery of Milo Cricket.

  • Paul Mooney (Mentor) for his enthusiasm and dedication to Scouts in Golden Plains Shire.

Volunteering gives us the opportunity for meaningful social participation, strengthens our community spirit, gives us a sense of belonging and connects us to like-minded people.

Golden Plains Shire acknowledges and celebrates all the volunteers and the positive impact they make to our community.
