Winter Home Fire Safety

A spate of recent fires in and around the Bendigo area should serve as a timely reminder to all Victorians about the importance of practicing home fire safety, particularly during the winter months.

CFA District 2 Operations Manager Steven Smith said fortunately none of the recent house fires was fatal.

During May a mother and her five children were left homeless after a fire destroyed the front room of their Flora Hill home, leaving the house uninhabitable.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an overloaded power board.

Also in May a family lost everything in a fire that destroyed their Ascot home. Fire Investigators believe the fire was caused by an unattended heater in a front room of the house.

“Luckily the family did have a working smoke alarm – which alerted them to the fire in the front of the house while they were at the back, and they were able to escape unharmed,” Mr. Smith said.

“Unfortunately the same cannot be said for many of their possessions.”

Another earlier incident forced a family and their young children to flee their fully engulfed Spring Gully home.

“Each year there are more than 4,500 house fires in Victoria. That’s 12 per day across the state.”

“More importantly, on average 20 people die every year from preventable house fires,” Mr. Smith said.

“All of these incidents could have been preventable.”

Top Winter Fire Safety Tips:
• Make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home.
• Test and clean smoke alarms regularly.
• Don’t overload power boards.
• Never leave cooking unattended
