Dereel community phone tower appeal backed by Council

Golden Plains Shire Council has a long history of lobbying for improved mobile coverage, especially considering the fire prone nature of much of the Shire.

Council was very pleased when notified in July 2015 that Dereel and Steiglitz would be getting base stations in Round 1 of the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Programme.

The notification from the Minister for Communications advised Council that Round 1 stations would be rolled out over a three year period, and that the sequence would be determined by the relevant telecommunication companies.

Mayor, Cr Des Phelan, says no planning applications have yet been submitted to Council for these two towers.

“Considering the fires in Dereel, particularly in 2013, 2014 and now on the weekend, Council would hope that the tower would become a higher priority for Telstra.

“Telstra has advised Council that they are aware of the need for the new towers.

“Telstra has advised that it is currently working through planning and site selection processes as well as working on potential co-location opportunities.

“The best guidance Telstra can give regarding completion times for the towers is sometime between January to March 2018.

“Council will stay in close contact with both Telstra and the Federal Government around this issue.”
