Bruces Creek Corridor Project

Bannockburn residents can now enjoy the benefits from the completion of a $212,500 Urban Improvement Project along the Bruce’s Creek Corridor.

Golden Plains Shire was fortunate to receive $106,250 funding through the State Government’s Creating Better Places Program, and Council matched the funding to enable completion of Stage One of the project.

This project was identified through the Bannockburn Urban Design Framework planning process and has been driven in partnership with Council and a range of user groups.

The project unveils the creek landscape and creates a public space that will now contribute significantly to achieving the objectives of the Creating Better Places Program. It is envisaged that together with general leisure and community use, this space will host a wide variety of activities such as nature walks, bike rides, a walking school bus program and social gatherings.

The Bruce’s Creek Open Space Reserve can now be considered a significant landscape corridor with high environmental values.  Works included weed control, erosion control and water sensitive urban design initiatives, including stormwater treatment zones, bio-retention areas and filtration areas.   Stage One also includes the vegetation of 24 hectares of open space with 1000 plants per hectare of various species and height to create a landscape typical of remnants along the creek.

Consistent with Council’s Paths and Trails Strategy and existing local path networks linking to the creek corridor, the path constructed is a 2.4m wide concrete path suitable for shared use by cyclists and pedestrians.

Stage Two is currently under construction, in a project jointly funded by Department of Planning and Community Development and Council under the Creating Better Places Program Round 4.

Planning Minister Justin Madden said Bannockburn was one of 13 Victorian communities to benefit from the Victorian Government’s $13.5 million four year Creating Better Places program.

“The Victorian Government is committed to supporting the development of strong, vibrant communities right across Victoria,” Mr Madden said.

“This program is about assisting Victorian council’s like the Golden Plains Shire and their communities to create well designed public spaces that are accessible and are welcoming.”

Golden Plains Shire Mayor, Cr Jenny Blake was delighted at news of the completion of Stage One and eagerly anticipates the second stage of works.

“Council is thrilled at the recent completion of Stage One works and will match the funding to deliver the $270,500 second stage of this project in partnership with the State Government and the local community,” said Cr Blake.
