Disability Family Day – Lethbridge

Sunday 23rd October, 2011
What a wonderful day was had by all at the 5th Annual Disability Family Day last weekend for families and Carers of children with disabilities from across Victoria.

The sun was shining, the kids were smiling and the Lethbridge Sport and Recreation complex was a hive of activity with Jumping Castles, Bungy Run, Animal Farm, Craft, Music, Massages and more.

Eric the Red entertained our families juggling knives on an 8ft unicycle followed by our wonderful roving entertainers with egg & spoon races, chicken dance, bootscootin comp and much more.  The Lethbridge CFA kept the kids entertained on the Fire Truck and had lots of giveways for them and Heartwood Horses fulfilled every little girls (and boys) dream of riding a pony.

This event has been created to bring together families of children with disabilities in a safe and engaging environment.  To give parents the opportunity to network with other families, take some time out, enjoy the massages and be in a stress free environment.  The parents thoroughly enjoy the day out where there is mutual respect and understanding from everyone in a safe and engaging environment.

The Disability Family Day has raised awareness across the many community organizations and groups about the issues that face families of children with disabilities.  It’s becoming a highlight on the calendar year as the one event that these families look forward to each year where they can come out as a whole family and spend the day with like minded people and not be overwhelmed by large crowds.

The event is well known for its mutual respect and understanding and the no big queues often associated with festivals.  The children have access to a range of activities including jumping castles, craft, face painting, circus acts, CFA displays, train rides, animal farms and the opportunity to just be themselves and not be judged.

This day was made possible with support from Smith Tracey Architects, Rotary and the Bannockburn and District Community Enterprise along with Golden Plains Parent Support Group, Golden Plains Shire, Queenscliff Music Festival, Luna Park, Carer Support Services, Foxy’s Café, Poppies Florist, SES, The Party Girl, Summer Sensations Berry Farm, Railway Hotel, Landmark, Chemmart Pharmacy Bannockburn, Golden Oldies Mens Group, Lethbridge Playgroup, Jumping About Castles, Bunnings, Kaiser Craft, Lethbridge CFA, Melanie West Massages, Troyburn Pty Ltd, The Party Girl, Camilo Olives, Barwon Water, Adventure Park Geelong, Wettenhalls Transport, Cazaly Lavender Farm, Lavandula, Clyde Park Wines, Lethbridge Wines, Bannockburn Hardware, Bannockburn Lions Club, Your Name Here, Bandale Chainsaws and Mowers, John Karounos and the numerous other volunteers that helped put this event together.
