Teesdale's Best Kept Secret

For years only locals knew about Teesdale’s best kept secret but now a new sign on the main road has revealed it to all who drive through the town.

Teesdale Grassy Woodlands is a beautiful 20ha reserve hidden behind the cricket oval but it’s open to all visitors to the town to enjoy.  An easy 1km walk along some magical natural tracks will take you into Teesdale as it was 157 years ago when Surveyor A.J. Skene described the Reserve as ‘thickly wooded principally of Sheoak’.

Fortunately Skene also declared the soil as ‘indifferent’ so the land was set aside as a crown land reserve where the community could run their family milking cows in the days before fresh milk was available from the Teesdale store.

The reserve is now managed by a committee of local people on behalf of the Golden Plains Shire Council. The Committee’s aim is to protect the reserve’s natural values and to encourage the community to be adventurous and come and discover the remarkable birdlife and wildflowers that make it unique.
