Celebrating Our Citizens - 2012 GPS Australia Day Awards
Mayor Geraldine Frantz expressed her gratitude and acknowledged the efforts of individuals who help make the shire a great place to live.
“On behalf of Council, I would like to congratulate its 2012 winners, who have shown exceptional community initiative and commitment and are most worthy of their awards,” said Cr Frantz.
Seka Powell of Bannockburn has been named the Shire’s Citizen of the Year for 2012. Seka’s nomination for this award is in recognition of her contribution to the mental health of the young people of Golden Plains Shire, through the Christmas in July charity event. This has involved a remarkable personal undertaking by Seka and is a true testament to her ongoing passion for supporting youth mental health.
Dawn McDonald of Meredith is the deserving recipient of the 2012 Senior Citizen of the Year Award. Dawn’s nomination acknowledges in particular her outstanding contribution to the community through her work to establish the Meredith Kindergarten, where she served as the first Committee President. Dawn’s preparedness to put her hand up for volunteer roles which contribute to the betterment of the community is an inspiration for all across the Shire.
David Beath of Napoleons has been named the Shire’s Young Citizen of the Year for 2012. David has been chosen for this award for his contribution to the Enfield community through his volunteer position on the Harrison Reserve Hall Committee of Management. David’s continued focus on the development of the Harrison Reserve as a facility that will provide services for youth and the greater community is to be celebrated.
The Community Event of the Year has been awarded to the Bamganie World War I Soldiers Re-Dedication Ceremony. The ceremony was a celebration of Bamganie history and the telling of a story that was about to be lost. This community led initiative respectfully acknowledged the story of our local area, our local families and our soldiers.
Importantly, the event offered an opportunity for the community to catch up with friends both old and new, learn about local history, listen to knowledgeable guest speakers, advance their pride in citizens past and present and to reflect and reminisce on this period of wartime service. Congratulations to the volunteer event committee for the organisation and running of this ceremony.
Golden Plains Shire’s Australia Day Awards for 2012 were presented at a ceremony prior to the January Council Meeting in Bannockburn.
